RESEARCH SCIENTIST IN VIROLOGY

ACADEMIC-RELATED RESEARCH STAFF GRADE RSII: £24,193 - £32,215 p.a.

An opportunity for a Senior Postdoctoral Research Scientist specialized
in Virology to join the group of Dr Stephen Fuller. The work, funded by
the Wellcome Trust Programme Grant, focuses on virus structure, assembly
and entry using cryo-electron microscopy and computer image
reconstruction. The researcher will co-ordinate work on retrovirus
structure and collaborations with other groups in Oxford, London and
Heidelberg. A minimum of five years postdoctoral experience working
with membrane viruses is essential. Experience with retroviruses and
interacting with structural biologists would be an advantage. The
laboratory is equipped for biochemical preparation, mammalian and insect
cell culture, X-ray crystallography, computer graphics, and
cryo-electron microscopy. The successful candidate will join a group
of six who interact closely with others in the Division and the Centre
to provide a friendly and stimulating work environment. Current work
encompasses studies on adeno, alpha, flavi, tecti, and retrovirus
structure. (Mancini et at, (2000) Mol Cell 5(2):255-66; Lescar et al
(2001) Cell 6:105(1):137-48; Ferlenghi et al (2001) Mol Cell
7(3):593-602; see also
http://www.strubi.ox.ac.uk/strubi/cryo/fuller_strubi for more complete
details. Recent publications on retrovirus structure include: Wilk et
al (2001) J of Virology 75:7995-8007; Wilk et al (2000) J of Virology
73:1931-1940; Wilk T and S Fuller (1999) Curr Opinion Struct Biol
9:231-243. The post is funded for four years in the first instance.
Informal inquiries to: enquiries at strubi.ox.ac.uk.

Please send your letter of application with full curriculum vitae and
the names and addresses of two referees to: Alicia Vaux, The Wellcome
Trust Centre for Human Genetics, Roosevelt Drive, Oxford OX3 7BN.

RESEARCH SCIENTIST IN IMAGE PROCESSING

ACADEMIC-RELATED RESEARCH STAFF GRADE RSIIX: £25,203 - £34,390 p.a.

An interesting and challenging opportunity for a Senior Postdoctoral
Scientist specialist in Image Processing Computing to join the group of
Dr Stephen Fuller. The work of the group funded by the Welcome Trust,
focuses on virus structure, assembly and entry using cryo-electron
microscopy and computer image reconstruction. The researcher will be
involved in refining and developing image processing programs for
determining three-dimensional structure from low contrast cryo-electron
micrographs. Candidates must be able to demonstrate solid postdoctoral
experience in scientific computing developing or maintaining programs in
FORTRAN and C on UNIX systems. Experience in image processing of
electron micrographs would be of advantage. Current projects in the
group include icosahedral reconstructions, electron crystallography,
tomography and single particle reconstruction. The group interacts
closely with others in the Division and the Centre to provide a friendly
and stimulating work environment. Current work encompasses studies on
adeno, alpha, flavi, tecti, and retrovirus structure. (Mancini et at,
(2000) Mol Cell 5(2):255-66; Lescar et al (2001) Cell 6:105(1):137-48;

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH SCIENTIST

ACADEMIC-RELATED RESEARCH STAFF GRADE RS1A: £17,451 - £26,229 p.a.

An opportunity for a Research Scientist with experience in cryo-electron
microscopy and image reconstruction to join the team of Dr Stephen
Fuller. The successful candidate will pursue studies of the membrane
containing bacteriophage PRD-1, and the structurally related adenovirus.
Some experience in the processing of micrographs of virus particles
would be an advantage.  See (Butcher et at (1995), EMBO J 14: 6078-86;
Rydman et at (1999) J Mol Biol 291: 575-87; San Martín et al (2001)
Structure 9: 917-930). You will join a group that interacts closely
with others within the Division and the Centre to provide a friendly and
stimulating work environment. The group's work on PRD-1, for example,
complements the crystallographic work in Professor Stuart's group that
should soon produce the first atomic resolution structure of the
icosahedral portion of this membrane virus. Other current work
encompasses studies on adeno, alpha, flavi, tecti, and retrovirus
structure. (Mancini et at, (2000) Mol Cell 5(2):255-66; Lescar et al
