Postdoc position

[Bridget Carragher]

	An NIH funded post-doctoral position is immediately available to work in
the laboratories of Dr Ron Milligan (Scripps Research Institute) and Dr.
Bridget Carragher (University of Illinois).  The candidate would join a
multidisciplinary team on a project whose goal is to develop a system for
rapid routine structure determination of macromolecular assemblies.  The
ultimate goal is to develop an integrated system that can produce an
electron density map of a structure within a few hours of inserting a
specimen in an electron microscope.  Implementing this system will
involve integrating the results of several ongoing research projects as
well as the development of new techniques.  The development of the
integrated system will be driven by studies on molecular motors in the
laboratory of Dr. Ron Milligan.

	The integrated system is being developed in a tight collaboration
between two laboratories.  The technical developements are being carried
out in the Imaging Technology Group, headed by Bridget Carragher and
Clint Potter, at the Beckman Institute, University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign.  The technology is then transferred to the Milligan
laboratory at the Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California.  The
role of the post-doctoral researcher will be to promote the tight
coupling between these two groups by implementing the integrated system
for a biologically interesting problem.  We envisage that the position
would be primarily located at the Scripps Research Institute but it will
be necessary for the candidate to spend up to 12 weeks of the year at the
Beckman Institute.

	A background in biology and some knowledge of electron microscopy
and image processing is preferred.
