The Plant Research Laboratory (PRL) at Michigan State University is recruiting up to two tenure-track Assistant Professors. The PRL is an internationally recognized research institute dedicated to fundamental discoveries in photosynthetic organisms, with long-standing support from the U.S. Department of Energy Basic Energy Sciences program. The PRL offers a highly collaborative research environment spanning plant biology, biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, chemistry, and computational biology.
Applicants who employ cryo-electron microscopy, including single-particle analysis, cryo-electron tomography, and correlative structural biology approaches as central tools in their research programs are encouraged to apply. The search welcomes candidates pursuing fundamental questions broadly in photosynthetic organisms, including plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria, using state-of-the-art experimental and computational approaches.
Michigan State University opened a newly renovated cryo-EM facility (2025) featuring:

Thermo Fisher Talos Arctica (200 keV) equipped with:
– Falcon 4i direct electron detector
– Selectris energy filter
– Volta phase plate

Thermo Fisher Titan Krios G4i (300 keV) equipped with:
– Falcon 4i direct electron detector
– Selectris-X energy filter
– Fringe-free illumination

  *
Thermo Fisher Helios Hydra Bio Dual Beam FIB-SEM with correlative fluorescence microscopy capabilities

  *   HPM Live μ high-pressure freezer for vitrification of thick samples and tissues

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research community that includes the PRL, the Plant Resilience Institute, the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center, and multiple departments across the Colleges of Natural Science and Agriculture & Natural Resources.
