*Call for papers for /Acta Crystallographica Section D: Structural 
Biology /Special Issue on Electron Microscopy image processing methods 
for Structural Biology*

Cryo-electron microscopy is a well-established technique for elucidating 
the three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules, whether 
isolated or in their cellular environment. The field is rapidly growing 
thanks to advances in sample preparation, electron optics, direct 
electron detectors, and image processing algorithms. This latter topic 
is an exciting scientific discipline in which new mathematical concepts 
and procedures lead to continual advances in achieving high resolution, 
characterising the dynamical features of biological macromolecules, and 
studying their interactions.

/Acta Crystallographica Section D, Structural Biology/(published by the 
IUCr) is a hybrid learned society journal dedicated to all aspects of 
structural biology, with particular emphasis on the structures of 
biological macromolecules and the methods used to determine them. 
Acknowledging the growing importance of cryo-electron microscopy, the 
journal dedicates an annual special issue to new algorithms, software, 
public image databases, and related work (previous special issues are

on single-particle analysis, electron crystallography, electron 
tomography, microelectron diffraction, and other applications of 
electron microscopy to solve structural biology problems will be considered.

The call for papers is divided into two stages. In the first phase, a 
white paper (free format*)* of up to 2 pages *must be submitted directly 
to **coss at cnb.csic.es* <mailto:coss at cnb.csic.es>. Upon pre-selection, 
the authors will be informed, and a full research article can be
