Graphene grids provide a stable solid–liquid interface that prevents samples from contacting the air–water interface (AWI). This helps reduce protein adsorption, denaturation, and preferred orientation, enabling more reliable 3D reconstruction.
Exceptional Stability and Reduced Beam-Induced Motion
Benefiting from high mechanical strength and excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, graphene grids help suppress beam-induced particle motion and improve specimen stability during imaging.
Formation of Uniform Ultrathin Vitrified Ice Layers
Functionalized graphene grids promote the formation of ultrathin vitrified ice layers while enabling most protein particles to localize at the graphene–water interface, facilitating high-resolution cryo-EM structure determination.
Reduced Sample Concentration Requirements
The high affinity and efficient particle adsorption provided by graphene grids can significantly reduce the sample concentration required for grid preparation, often by up to an order of magnitude, thereby minimizing the consumption of precious biological samples.
