Good news everybody!


I had heard from David Morgan at IU that Ted Pella was planning to discontinue
the 2160 l/mm waffle grid with latex beads (product
no. 603) and replace it with a newer one, namely product no. 607. This latter
type grid looks very much  like product no. 673 on
it and has given a lot of folks a ton of grief. The difference between these
grids lies in the manufacturing process - the 603
type grid is made from a grooved master whereas the 607 and 673 type grids are
made from an etched silicon grating. I contacted
the folks at Ted Pella and explained how the 607 and 673 type grid weren’t very
useful for us folks in calibrating SerialEM. Also,
it turns out that the newer 607 type grid wasn’t particularly liked in
Materials Science as it created problems on aberration
corrected scopes. The end result of our collective bickering is that Ted Pella
will bring back the grooved replica as product
607-A. Now, whether or not this means we’ll also see an updated version of the
603 type grid  is unclear. But, applying latex
beads to a new 607-A grid and the turning it into a type 603 type grid wouldn’t
exactly be rocket science. Just sayin’.
