Hi,
Pleased to share details of our latest webinar:
Cost effectiveness for efficient cryo-EM facilities
12 Noon, CEST/11 am GMT, 23 September 2025
Register here: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.thermofisher.com/de/en/home/events/cost-effectiveness-for-efficient-cryo-em-facilities.html__;!!Mih3wA!ElN6erVevtyf8CQrxbu31u5HivGvIvOyG-u_E1TfMxgBmBjpCKTnQgJxB-uLYF7GsdykTXboSpXR2EXcnghx1PwiI2IhRPE$
Central facilities and collaborative ownership are effective and efficient ways to maximize availability and use of high-end instrumentation, including cryo-TEMs and plasma-FIBs. Despite the many benefits of central facilities, they require good cooperation between the manager and users to maintain scientific and financial productivity. Join our panel discussion with experienced facility managers to discover how to improve operations at your facility. With Peter O'Toole of the University of York and the Microscopists podcast and Emma Hesketh of the University of Leicester.
Managers will learn:
* Strategies for acquiring new instruments and equipment
* How to efficiently manage and train users
* Effective methods for cost recovery and balancing budgets
Users will learn:
* How facility access and charging works
* Reasons for training and usage requirements
* How to budget for facility costs when applying for funding
We look forward to seeing some of you there!
About the speakers:
Dr. Emma Hesketh, Facility Manager, Midlands Regional Cryo-EM Facility, University of Leicester
Emma has over 10 years of experience in electron microscopy, specializing in single particle analysis. Her cryo-EM journey began at the University of Leeds in the Asbury Biostructure Laboratories, where she researched virus genome encapsidation using cryo-EM before transitioning into a support scientist role within the electron microscopy facility.
For the past two years, Emma has managed the Midlands Regional Cryo-EM Facility, a cutting-edge laboratory established in 2017. The Midlands partnership now includes the Universities of Leicester, Birmingham, Aston, Nottingham, and Warwick. The facility features a Titan Krios Transmission Electron Microscope (previously produced by FEI), a bespoke computing cluster, and fully equipped sample preparation laboratories all supported by a dedicated expert team.
Emma is passionate about training, with a strong focus on optimizing sample preparation and hands-on support. She has enabled numerous successful collaborations across academia and industry and is committed to making cryo-EM more accessible, efficient, and rewarding for researchers at every level.
Dr. Peter O'Toole, Director of the Bioscience Technology Facility, University of York
Peter covers the broad spectrum of technologies required for a wide user base of multi-disciplinary scientists, including data science, genomics, imaging and cytometry, metabolomics and proteomics, molecular interactions and biophysics, and protein production. He has a team of 31 expert staff.
Peter built up and heads the highly successful Imaging and Cytometry Labs, which include an array of light and electron microscopes, flow cytometers, and novel instrumentation. This is a flagship EuroBioimaging node and Zeiss Labs at Location that hosts multiple demo instruments for Zeiss, Coulter, PhaseFocus, Tomocube (for which he has helped design), and BD.
He is the president of the Royal Microscopical Society and an active member on many other international bodies, including CTLS, TSN, and ELMI, and he chairs and serves on multiple national funding grant panels and international institutional strategic advisory committees.
With a PhD from the Cell Biophysics Laboratory at the University of Essex, he has been involved in many aspects of fluorescence imaging and cytometry. He currently focuses on technology and method development of novel probes, novel imaging modalities, data analysis, and national networks. His lab also provides research support to many academics and commercial organizations with ongoing collaborations and consultancy contracts with many leading companies.
Peter is also heavily involved with training through a variety of international courses and wider communication via his podcasts, The Microscopists and Flow Stars.
