Marin,
Their argument is indeed speed, but it raises the question of whether the drop in speed is significant or not. That was why I was asking about the experiences of people who might have tried this.

Dear David
The reason for a RAID-0 rather a RAID-5 is undoubtedly the higher I/O speed and not primarily a matter of company policy...
Cheers

Hi,
We had an issue with a disk in the RAID array on our K3 last week. It fortunately turned out to be a non-fatal error, but it did make me realize that this is a RAID0 array and that a real disk error could result in troublesome loss of data.
I asked a Gatan engineer who is here installing a system on a new microscope about switching to RAID5 or RAID6. His comment was that company policy is RAID0 only, but that he didn't see any reason other than a loss in write speed that could result from switching RAID type.
Has anyone changed the RAID on a Gatan computer to something else, and if so, have you had any issues?
Thanks in advance.
