Dear Rachel and Tobias,

Thank you very much for your valuable feedback. We are already in contact with Mr. Wiemer to find out more about the CCU-010 machine, which seems to be the most modulable and promising option.

Cheers,
Marion

Hello Marion,

We have been using the Leica EM ACE600 to make continuous carbon films and it’s been working nicely. We only have the setup for thread, not with rods. Unfortunately it broke, we didn’t have it repaired and have been using the Leica EM ACE200 in another lab, which definitely doesn’t reach a good enough vacuum to produce nice, continuous carbon film from our experience.

We don’t have any experience with the Quorum model, but were ready and still are, to buy the Safematic machine that Tobias was describing. I’ve heard very good things about it from different labs and it’s very user friendly and reliable. We wanted to buy it for both coating sapphire discs, but also for continuous carbon, unfortunately we can’t right now. I can also second that Mr. and Mr. Wiemer are very knowledgeable and I would seriously think about testing it either with Tobias or they will come and do a demo for you.

Best wishes,
Rachel

Hello Marion,

We have the safematic CCU-010. It is a pure roomtemperature machine, not too expensive, simple and fast. We use it only to evaporate some nm carbon (or gold with another head) on our samples - we have no experience in creating continuous films with this machine. For our purposes it works fast and reliable. It works with carbon thread evaporation, oil-free pumping (if you pay for it) (turbo and prepump), quartz monitor (overall deposition and deposition rate), sample stage rotation (even planetary rotation possible as option).
If it fits your requirement profile, try to demo it/get an on-site demo specifically for film preparation.

cheers
Tobias

PS: you are more than welcome to visit us in lovely Dresden to test it.
PPS: in germany baltic-praeparation.de sells the CCU-010. Mrs. and Mr. Wiemer are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. And he worked before at Bal-Tec :)

Subject: [3dem] Carbon evaporator for SPA

Dear all,

we are in the process of buying a carbon evaporator for producing additional
5-15nm support films in SPA. Our experience in making carbon films is based on
older machines that are no longer available. So far, we got two quotes more on
the high-end side of the instrument spectrum but considering the good quality
films we were able to produce with the old machines we are wondering if such an
investment is necessary for SPA:

Leica EM ACE600 Carbon Thread Coater
* Carbon thread evaporation
* Oil free UHV pump system with turbomolecular pump
* Quartz crystal thickness measurement
* Sample stage rotation

Quorum Q150V E Plus
* Carbon rod evaporation
* Oil free UHV pump system with turbomolecular pump
* Quartz crystal thickness measurement
* Sample stage rotation

Much cheaper options like the Leica EM ACE200 exist. We would appreciate some
advice on how important expensive features like ultra high vacuum or sample
stage rotation really are for SPA. Hints which instrument you are successfully
using for this application would also be very helpful.

Thank you,
Cheers,
Marion
