The goal of the Fernandez-Busnadiego lab is to unravel the structural basis of fundamental cellular mechanisms, as well as their alterations in human disease. We employ multidisciplinary approaches, centered on state-of-the art cryo-electron tomography (see e.g. Bäuerlein et al., Cell 2017<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28890085/__;!!Mih3wA!Ha-Mgkj5t6-8sqTdV8RcLuMK-inNrxw88mJvzZLURoW1pGyl8kIj__TkonFVaXOIJbcyco3HdsS0c1RCMMrUicHRA_rtOY8FZFJxFGUGGg$ >; Guo et al., Cell 2018<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29398115/__;!!Mih3wA!Ha-Mgkj5t6-8sqTdV8RcLuMK-inNrxw88mJvzZLURoW1pGyl8kIj__TkonFVaXOIJbcyco3HdsS0c1RCMMrUicHRA_rtOY8FZFLzBOVd4Q$ >; Collado et al., Dev Cell 2019<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31743662/__;!!Mih3wA!Ha-Mgkj5t6-8sqTdV8RcLuMK-inNrxw88mJvzZLURoW1pGyl8kIj__TkonFVaXOIJbcyco3HdsS0c1RCMMrUicHRA_rtOY8FZFIwPv4Z6w$ >; Trinkaus et al., Nat Comm 2021<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33854052/__;!!Mih3wA!Ha-Mgkj5t6-8sqTdV8RcLuMK-inNrxw88mJvzZLURoW1pGyl8kIj__TkonFVaXOIJbcyco3HdsS0c1RCMMrUicHRA_rtOY8FZFIVnX1x_Q$ >; Riemenschneider et al., EMBO Rep 2022<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35438230/__;!!Mih3wA!Ha-Mgkj5t6-8sqTdV8RcLuMK-inNrxw88mJvzZLURoW1pGyl8kIj__TkonFVaXOIJbcyco3HdsS0c1RCMMrUicHRA_rtOY8FZFIopp20Ow$ >).

The lab is part of the Cluster of Excellence "Multiscale Bioimaging: from Molecular Machines to Networks of Excitable cells" (MBExC<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://mbexc.de/en/__;!!Mih3wA!Ha-Mgkj5t6-8sqTdV8RcLuMK-inNrxw88mJvzZLURoW1pGyl8kIj__TkonFVaXOIJbcyco3HdsS0c1RCMMrUicHRA_rtOY8FZFJkVTPc4w$ >). MBExC is an interdisciplinary, cross-faculty research center of the University of Göttingen and pursues a novel research approach with joint efforts in modern bioimaging, in particular photonics, molecular biosciences, neuroscience and cardiovascular research. The goal of MBExC is to decipher disease relevant nanoscale functional units in neurons, sensory cells and cardiomyocytes with the long-term goal to develop innovative therapeutic strategies for disorders affecting the heart and the brain, or both.

Different projects are available, harnessing correlative cryo-focused ion beam milling and cryo-electron tomography to investigate the molecular architecture of cells. We are well-equipped for this purpose, with amongst others Leica cryo-CLEM, Aquilos 2 cryo-FIB + iFLM and Titan Krios G4 + Selectris/Falcon 4i.

We are looking for highly motivated applicants with a Ph.D. in Biology/Physics/Computer Science. Previous experience in cryo-EM/ET is a big plus!
