Having just fixed this on my Macbook Pro - note that the plist file has changed in recent XQuartz releases:

defaults write org.xquartz.X11 enable_iglx -bool YES 

was required for XQuartz 2.8.1 not org.macosforge.xquartz.X11 as before.
