Dear colleagues,

Cryo-EM faculty positions in the School of Life Sciences at SUSTech in Shenzhen, China (A joint search with SUSTech Cryo-EM Center for Structural Biology)

We are launching a search for up to 20 new faculty members in all ranks (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, and Chair Professor) in the School of Life Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech, based in Shenzhen, China). This is a joint faculty search with the SUSTech Cryo-EM Center for Structural Biology and focuses on cryo-EM related research areas, aiming to establish an integral structural biology/biological structures research theme in SUSTech. Faculty rank will be determined by the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. We will provide globally competitive salary and benefits, as well as excellent research support.

The candidates are expected to establish a high-quality and unique research program. In addition to evidence of prior academic achievements, the successful applicants must demonstrate future research plans that emphasize creative application/optimization of EM techniques to explore new fields, development/improvement of critical EM methods or instruments, and/or highly innovative interdisciplinary EM research.

Applications are now open for receipt and will be reviewed on a rolling basis, until all positions are filled. For information inquiries and submits an application, please contact by email to sunj2018 at sustech.edu.cn or zhenghx3 at mail.sustech.edu.cn. We are looking forward to your application.

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply for attending this year’s SUSTech Global Forum. Please submit the following application materials to the search committee of the School of Life Sciences (sunj2018 at sustech.edu.cn), entitled “cryo-EM related research areas,SUSTech Global Scientist Interdisciplinary Forum Application” before Dec 30, 2021.

1) Curriculum vitae

2) Cover letter

3) Research statement (max 3 pages). Summary of current and future research program, which include description of how you foresee your EM research uniquely contributing to previously unexplored fields over the next 5-10 years.

4) Teaching statement (max 1 page)

5) Contact information for three referees

Successful applicants will receive the invitation before January 3, 2022.

About the School of Life Science at SUSTech:

The School of Life Sciences held the inauguration ceremony on December 4, 2020. The founding dean of the school is Prof. Mingjie Zhang, a neurobiologist/structural biologist, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and founding member of Hong Kong Academy of Sciences. The School of Life Sciences will establish at least five academic departments, including Biology, Immunity and Microbiology, System Biology, Chemical Biology, and Neuroscience. Expanding from traditional biological research areas, the school strives to become a prominent hub of modern life science research, promote interdisciplinary investigation, stimulate the development and application of new technologies, and embrace future life sciences that are quantitative, big data-driven, multidimensional and multi-scale.

About the EM facility of SUSTech Cryo-EM Center for Structural Biology:

SUSTech Cryo-EM Center for Structural Biology is based on an open facility funded by the Shenzhen government, occupying a space of 1256 m2. The facility was initially planned in May 2017, and was opened by Professor Shenfang Sui and Professor Richard Henderson to users in December 2018, being inaugurated on the first floor of the Biology Hall of SUSTech. The center is designed to support the scientific research and industrial upgrade in Shenzhen, the Guangdong-Hongkong-Macau Greater Bay Area, and the South China, particularly in the areas of biomedicine, precision medicine, and other relevant areas of life science.

As a major basic scientific research facility in Shenzhen, the EM facility of SUSTech Cryo-EM Center for Structural Biology houses six TFS Krios scopes that are all equipped with DED and energy filter, including TFS Falcon 3, and Falcon 4, Gatan BioQuantum k2 and k3, and TFS Selectris F4 respectively. A state-of-the-art Kriso G4 with Cc and Cs correctors is installing in site at the moment.  Additionally, the center has Talos L120C G2, Aquilos Cryo-FIB, Volumescope 2 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Helios G4 UC DualBeam microscope, and various sample preparation instruments. It also has a high-performance GPU computation cluster for processing of EM image data. The EM facility provides exceptional support for the research areas using Single-particle cryo-EM, Electron tomography (in situ), Micro-electron diffraction, etc.

I wish you a merry X'mas and happy New Year.

Peiyi
