Dear all,

We are looking for a PhD Student to work at the interface between bionanotechnology and immunology in the lab of Thom Sharp. The successful candidate will work with DNA nanotechnology, 3D cryo-electron microscopy, antibody complexes, and proteins of the human complement system to understand more about how our innate immune system is activated. The Sharp lab is in the department of Molecular Cell Biology and is embedded in the Electron Microscopy group headed by Prof. Abraham (Bram) Koster, which also develops methods for EM, correlative light-electron microscopy and super-resolution light microscopy.
Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in biochemistry or a related subject with a strong biological background, such as chemistry or biophysics. Applicants should be highly motivated, enthusiastic and creative as well as skilled and result-driven. Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must as this project is highly interfacial.
The LUMC has excellent facilities for electron microscopy, and is closely affiliated with the national center for EM (NeCEN). The department also has facilities available for molecular biology and chemistry, and the Sharp lab works closely with the nearby Chemistry Department at the University of Leiden. The collaboration between LUMC, Leiden University and the Leiden Bio Science Park creates unique possibilities for medical innovation in Leiden and the surrounding area. Leiden is a small and dynamic university city with several excellent museums, bars, parks and restaurants. It has direct train connections to The Hague (15 min), Schiphol airport (20 min), Amsterdam (30 min), Rotterdam (30 min) and Utrecht (40 min). Leiden is also a great place to live and work.
Salary starts from €2266 per month, rising to €2903 per month over 4 years. The terms of employment offered by the LUMC are highly favourable. For example, you will receive 8% holiday remuneration and an 8.3% year-end bonus. Also, as employee of one of the University Hospitals in the Netherlands, you can benefit from our collective health insurance policy. Foreign applicants may also be eligible for a substantial tax benefit (30% ruling).
The application procedure will involve an interview and references will be requested. The starting date will be from 1st Jan 2018.
The deadline for applicants is 9th Oct 2017. Please see this link to apply and for more information:
