The Position

 
The FEI share of Living Lab is organizationally part of the Life Science Business Unit. The Living 
lab reports into the Life Science Solutions Program management, ensuring close interaction. At the 
heart of the Living Lab is a joint scientific program. The Living Lab scientific team is headed by a 
team leader research scientist, responsible for managing the contribution and output of the FEI 
scientific team. This position is within that team. The applications software engineer is responsible 
for the software dimensions of the full workflows of the Living Lab (software for up and 
downstream workflow processing and control as well as optimization of the workflow on the 
microscopy, i.e. application software).

The Software Engineer is responsible for the design, development, integration, troubleshooting and 
debug of software programs for software enhancements and new products in the context as 
described above.

*Conduct bug fixing on existing issues through software implementation, development of 
test methodologies and performing unit tests. 
*Own the coding of feature set developments for product enhancement and new 
applications. 
*Develop software tools including operating systems, compilers, routers, networks, utilities, 
databases and Internet-related tools.  
*Maintain software development practices in ClearQuest/Clearcase. 
*Write detailed software specifications based on system performance requirements and 
customer application requirements. Determine hardware compatibility and/or influence 
hardware design. 
*Make practical development choices given limited design information and defined delivery 
schedules. 

 Position Requirements 

*The ideal candidate for this position enjoys working in a multi-disciplinary technical 
environment to solve complex technical problems. If you enjoy the development of high-
performance integrated systems, this is an excellent opportunity. 
*The successful candidate will possess the following combination of education and 
experience: 
*Typically requires a University Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or 
related technical discipline. An advanced degree is preferred. 
*Typically requires approximately 10 years of experience;  
*Preference for development experience with highly-integrated, high-performance systems 
industries. At a minimum, development experience at the system level. 
*cyro EM or Biology background
