A position is available for an Electron Microscopy Facility Manager
Department of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology
University of Sheffield, U.K.
Ref: R06263 Closing Date: 27/05/08 Grade: 8
Salary: £33,779 – £40,335 per annum with the potential to progress to
£45,397
The successful applicant will be responsible for managing the
biological electron microscopy facility at the University of Sheffield
which is a joint facility between the Departments of Molecular Biology
and Biotechnology and the Department of Biomedical Sciences. The
microscopes are housed in a laboratory that straddles the two
departments under the direction of Professor Per Bullough (http://www.shef.ac.uk/mbb/staff/bullough
). The laboratory has an active research programme centred around
cryoEM of membrane protein assemblies and large protein complexes .
The successful candidate would be expected to play a major role in
supporting these research activities.
In addition, the EM facility provides a service for other users from
both within the departments and outside. Services include sample
sectioning, SEM and cryoEM and these are already supported in part by
another member of staff. The successful candidate would be expected to
oversee these activities and also to train and supervise new users.
Applicants should have a PhD (or equivalent) in a related area and
experience in cryoEM.
The laboratory is equipped with a Philips CM200 FEG + Gatan 2K camera,
Philips CM100 + Gatan 1K camera, Tecnai 120 kV G2 Biotwin + 1K camera,
a selection of Oxford and Gatan cryo-stages, equipment for SEM and
sectioning, including a Leica Ultracut UC6 plus FC6 cryochamber, Zeiss
Phodis/SCAI scanner and Sira optical diffractometer. We are aiming to
replace the Philips instruments in the near future.
