Postdoctoral position available at UAB
A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Terje
Dokland in the Department of Microbiology at the University of
Alabama at Birmingham.
The focus of our lab is on viral structure and assembly processes.
Two systems are being studied: one is the nucleocapsids of enveloped
(+)RNA viruses; the other is the bacteriophage P2/P4 system. The
projects would involve structure determination by electron microscopy
or X-ray crystallography as well as biochemical and biophysical
characterization of the assembly process. Experience with cryo-EM, 3D
reconstruction methods and/or X-ray crystallography and familiarity
with UNIX-based computer systems is highly desirable.
Our laboratory was recently established in the Bevill building on the
UAB campus and is well equipped for molecular biology, biochemistry,
protein purification, crystallization and structure determination. An
FEI Tecnai F20 200kV FEG electron microscope will be installed in a
new EM facility in fall 2004. There is access to X-ray generators at
the nearby Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering.
UAB is a major health and biomedical research center in the Southern
U.S. and the Department of Microbiology at UAB is presently the sixth
most highly funded microbiology department in the U.S. (NIH funding).
The research-oriented department has 41 faculty covering an extremely
wide range of research, including microbial genetics, pathogenesis,
immunology, virology, biophysics and structural biology.
As a place to live, Alabama is not as bad as you may think.
Birmingham is the biggest city in Alabama and has an active arts and
music scene, but retains a pleasant small-town feel, nestled in the
surrounding forested hills.
Interested candidates may send applications, including a CV, list of
publications and names of three referees to dokland at uab.edu. Informal
requests are welcome.
