The sobering response was that, realistically, tomography currently plays only a marginal role in most industrial settings — a sharp contrast to academic excitement around cryo-ET. This disconnect was surprising to many and underscored the need for a more open and nuanced conversation within the community.

Tomography offers unique strengths, particularly in capturing structural detail within native cellular environments. However, there are significant practical and biological limitations that currently hinder its broader adoption compared to single particle analysis and other established structural approaches. At the same time, cryo-ET could create new opportunities for microscopists to contribute to discovery in ways not yet fully explored by industry.

This webinar aims to explore both sides of that conversation: how scientists in academia or those considering a move to industry can better understand the practical needs and expectations of industrial research, and how those already working in industry might re-evaluate the potential contributions tomography can make to drug discovery.

To help us navigate this discussion, we’re fortunate to be joined by two experts who bring both depth and firsthand industry perspective to the topic. Maryam Khoshouei (Novartis) and Dimitry Tegunov (Genentech) have both contributed to method development for cryo-ET in academia and now work in industrial settings. Their combined experience at the interface of technology development and applied research makes them uniquely suited to speak to the current realities and future potential of tomography in drug discovery.

Webinar Details
Attendees are encouraged to bring questions and engage directly with our panelists throughout the session.

About the Panelists

Dimitry Tegunov
Principal Scientist & Group Leader, Genentech
LinkedIn

Dimitry Tegunov, Ph.D., is Principal Scientist and Group Leader at Genentech, where he develops advanced computational methods for cryo-EM and in situ structural biology. With a background in biochemistry, biophysics, and computer science, he has contributed to key structural studies of macromolecular complexes and viral polymerases, including SARS-CoV-2. Previously at the Max Planck Institute, Dimitry combines algorithm design with molecular biology to resolve the structure and dynamics of macromolecules at near-atomic resolution.

Maryam Khoshouei
Principal Scientist, Novartis
LinkedIn

Maryam Khoshouei, Ph.D., is a Principal Scientist at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research, where she uses advanced cryo-EM to accelerate drug discovery. She earned her Ph.D. at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry and holds degrees in applied physics and nanotechnology from Chalmers University. Maryam helped develop phase contrast methods later commercialized by Thermo Fisher. Her work bridges physics and life sciences to translate structural insights into biomedical breakthroughs.

About Clovertex
Clovertex specializes in cryo-EM cloud infrastructure for biotech and pharma, delivering tailored, scalable, and compliant solutions that evolve with customer needs. As an AWS Life Sciences Competency Partner, Clovertex is recognized for its expertise in Research IT, particularly its impact on cryo-EM for drug discovery. Clovertex automates hardware, software, and data management within a customer’s own cloud account (e.g., AWS) while ensuring compliance with corporate IT policies. Continuously maintained and optimized, it’s the smart way to run cryo-EM on AWS and the cloud—so scientists can focus on science, not IT.
