I don't know how things work in GMS 1.x, but from my experience, the license installer is doing nothing but copying the license files you have to this folder: "<i>C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\_GatanInstall</i>"</div>

Then the GMS installer reads the license files from this folder. I did this for GMS 2.x and I transferred the license to a new computer using this way. For GMS 1.x, the procedure may be different. You can also find the license installer in the folder for the
free offline version of GMS 3.x that can be downloaded from <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.gatan.com/installation-instructions*Step1__;Iw!!Mih3wA!ADjDr9hGLlqTneRUQS4F02T6YuvUFHjMqmQ9n8KOnzY8fAWm4dKAgs7PRoYsdhIo5fU7NY-Co3m2x07V5b0P3II$" data-auth="NotApplicable" title="https://www.gatan.com/installation-instructions#Step1">
Gatan's website</a>. The license installer I downloaded from there worked for me for GMS 2.x. But as I said, it is just copying your license files into the above-mentioned folder. So, in summary, this is what worked for me: </div>

<li><span>Copy the license files from the old computer from "<span style="text-align:start; background-color:rgb(255,255,255); display:inline!important"><i>C:\ProgramData\Gatan\Licenses</i></span>"</span></li><li><span>Use the license installer that comes with the free offline version of GMS 3.x and place the license files you copied from the old computer in the same folder as the license installer. Running the installer will copy the license files to "<i style="text-align:start; background-color:rgb(255,255,255)">C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Temp\_GatanInstall</i>".
You can delete the license files of the free offline version in this folder. </span></li><li><span>Run the GMS installer and hopefully the installer will read the license files and install the software. </span></li></ol>

Thanks. I know where to find the license files. What is not clear is whether simply copying old licenses onto the new machine will solve the problem, or if the installer program from Gatan does things like modify the registry.<br>

I am not sure about Windows XP, but in Windows 10, you can find the Gatan license files in the following folder: </div>

We have an ancient microscope that has an ancient Gatan camera controlled by a Windows XP computer. The computer has been giving us trouble and our campus IT people would like to see it vanish, so we are planning to upgrade it. I was all set to pay for an
upgrade from our ancient version of DigitalMicrograph (GMS 1.x, if I remember correctly) to GMS 3.x, but I learned that our camera is not supported in recent versions of GMS and that an upgrade simply would not work.

I was able to build a Windows 10 virtual machine, and to install an older version of DigitalMicrograph onto it. That VM obviously didn't have a camera attached, but that process indicated that I might be able to install the older version of DM on a modern
machine and have everything work properly. So that is the current plan.</div>
