Talk title: Single particle cryo-EM: from atomic structure to mechanism and beyond<br>

Dr. Yifan Cheng is currently an Investigator of Howard Hughes Medical Institute and a Professor at Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of California San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, followed by postdoctoral
fellowships at University of Oslo and the Max-Planck-Institute. In 1996, he received training in cryo-electron microscopy from Professors Kenneth Taylor at Florida State University and Yoshinori Fujiyoshi at Kyoto University. In 1999, he joined the laboratory
of Thomas Walz to set up cryo-EM operations at Harvard Medical School. In 2006 he became faculty at University of California San Francisco and has stayed there since<span style="color:#1F497D">.</span> He has been an HHMI Investigator since 2015. He is the
recipient of the Christian B. Anfinsen Award from The Protein Society (2018), elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Science (2019) and National Academy of Sciences (2020).<br>

Patricia obtained her MSc from Leiden University (The Netherlands), studying the selective reduction of nitrosobenzene over mixed manganese oxides. She obtained her PhD from Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) studying TS-1 zeolite synthesis and
catalytic applications. Following a postdoctoral position at Shell research centre (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), she learned all about TEM during a postdoctoral position at the NCHREM (Delft, The Netherlands). Subsequently she was appointed Assistant Professor
at the Chemical Engineering department (catalysis engineering group) at Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands). She came to South Africa in 2015 as SARChI Chair Nanomaterials for Catalysis. She has always enjoyed travelling and has held many short-term
visiting scientist positions throughout her career.<br>
