<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">We seek a motivated individual to join the recently expanded Robert P. Apkarian Integrated Electron Microscopy Core (IEMC) at Emory University. The scientist will assist users in all steps of single-particle cryo-electron
microscopy, including sample preparation, screening, data collection, and data processing. The core houses a ThermoFisher Talos L120C screening microscope and a ThermoFisher Talos Arctica 200 kV FEG-TEM with a Gatan BioQuantum energy filter and K3 direct electron
detector for high-resolution structure determination. This position will report to the Core Director and assist in routine activities in a team.

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">JOB DESCRIPTION:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Under minimal supervision, the Assistant Academic Research Scientist performs a wide range of highly technical and complex tasks necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Responsible for working with experimental platforms specific to the hiring Program.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Duties will include but are not limited to experimental design, data analysis, and interpretation and communication of results of basic and/or translational research.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Will be required to review the literature and apply advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">May assist in grant and other funding applications, as necessary and appropriate.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Performs other responsibilities as required.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Work with other team members on Negative stain and Cryo-grid preparation and grid screening on Talos 120 kV and Talos 200 kV Arctica microscopes.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Plan and execute experiments and assist core users in electron microscopy sample preparation and imaging.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Contribute to the implementation of new experimental methods in electron microscopy and sample preparation.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Ensure accurate and adequate data recording, maintenance, and delivery from studies for IEMC customers.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Participate in the organization and maintenance of the IEMC infrastructure.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Ensure high quality and high throughput data acquisition on the Talos Arctica.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Provide guidance in sample preparation, data collection, and in the use of current image processing programs.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Masters or Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, physics or related field.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Experience in the use of FEI microscopes and Grid Preparation instruments such as Vitrobot, CP3-Plunger, and other ancillary instruments.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Expertise in the use of current cryo-electron microscopy methods which include data collection (EPU, Serial EM or Leginon) and any of the image processing software (Relion, CryoSparc, EMAN2, cisTEM, Sphire).<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Prior experience in macromolecular model building using Chimera and Coot, as well as structure validation tools, will be advantageous.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Excellent technical, communication, and teaching skills.<o:p></o:p></p>
