The South African Structural Biology Initiative

TWO FACULTY POSTS AT
THE
UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN AND THE
UNIVERSITY OF THE WESTERN
CAPE

The University of Cape Town (UCT) and University of the Western Cape
(UWC)
Joint Programme in Structural Biology has created two new faculty
posts,
sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, to establish
a
postgraduate degree programme - the first in continental
Africa. This
programme will be located at UCT in the new
Institute for Infectious
Diseases and Molecular Medicine and at UWC in the
Department of
Biotechnology. The initiative involves collaboration
between fifteen senior
faculty staff located at UCT and UWC with established
research programmes in
molecular biology, cell biology, chemistry,
biotechnology, genomics and
bioinformatics (South African National
Bioinformatics Institute: SANBI).
There is a wide range of infrastructure
appropriate to the development of
structural biology, including X-ray
crystallography, NMR, EM and
computational modelling.

One post, to be
located at UWC, is for a Protein Crystallographer. You will
be responsible
for
* running the newly acquired X-ray diffraction system
* supervising
and assisting students with a protein crystallography
web-based instruction
module
* teaching students how to prepare and crystallize proteins
* and
supervising student research projects involving protein
structure
determination.

The other post, to be located at UCT, is for
an Electron Microscopist with
experience in structural biology and
macromolecular structure determination.
You will be responsible
for
* creating a computer-based, Masters level course in EM
structure
determination

* and will supervise the use of the
cryo-electron
microscope.

Candidates for both posts should possess an
appropriate PhD and experience,
and will be expected to teach postgraduate
students and establish a research
programme.

In the first instance the
posts will be on a three-year contract basis at
the level of university
Senior Lecturer/Lecturer.

Cape Town, apart from its important position as
one of the 3 metropoles in
an intensely challenging, rapidly developing
country, offers a
Mediterranean-style climate together with many other
attractions:
magnificent mountains, sandy beaches, vineyards, excellent
English-medium
primary to tertiary educational institutions, shops, sporting
and
entertainment facilities. Despite prevailing exchange rates, the
buying
power of the Rand remains good.

Please send a letter of
application, your CV (no certificates), plus a
one-page summary of your CV,
together with the names, postal/email addresses
and telephone/fax numbers of
3 referees, to: Staff Recruitment & Selection
(Ref: 653),
