<i>Objectives<br>

</i></b></font><font face="Times New Roman" size="+2"
color="#000000">Structure determination by electron microscopy and
electron diffraction of organic materials from paraffins to proteins
has brought a wealth of new information, especially with the help of
cryo-electron and low dose microscopy. Techniques like single particle
reconstruction applied to the structure of viruses and ribosomes and
automatic tomography techniques combined with cryo-microscopy have
permitted structure determination of biological macromolecules to a
limit of a few Ångström.<br>
<br>
Electron microscopy and electron diffraction have also been used
widely over the past decades in investigations of inorganic and
organic materials, although the lack of knowledge about their power
for atomic structure determination of inorganic materials has limited
its use. A wide range of inorganic structures of metals and alloys,
oxides and semiconductors, thin films, complex minerals,
superstructures and superconductors, have been solved by electron
crystallography. Electron crystallography data provides a complement
to X-ray and neutron diffraction data, especially when there are no
large single crystals available. Moreover, advanced instrumentation
and software for accurate recording and measurement of electron
microscopy images and electron diffraction intensities have been
developed, including CCD cameras and image plates.<br>
<br>
The objective of the 8th Euro Summer School on Electron
Crystallography is to provide basic knowledge for Ph.D. students and
scientists interested in applying electron crystallography techniques
for structure determinations of inorganic and organic materials and
biomolecules. Lectures will discuss both basic and advanced aspects of
theory and instrumentation. All lecturers are established scientists
in the field of electron crystallography, with well proven teaching
experience. Practical software training is an essential part of the
School. The participants are welcome to present posters.</font></div>
<div><font face="Times New Roman" size="+2" color="#000000"><br>
The first two days of the Electron Crystallography School will be
common to all participants, while the last three days are split into
two parallel sessions, one specialising on biological macromolecules
and the other on inorganic materials, each accepting 25 students. The
school will start with a get-together party on Friday June 7. The
first lecture starts Saturday June 8 at 08.30. There are four
lectures every morning and computer lab sessions every afternoon. The
last lab finishes on Wednesday June 12 at 16.30.<br>

<i><b>Site<br>
<br>
</b></i>The school will take place in the conference and education
centre Murikka outside the City of Tampere. For more information,
visit Murikka´s website www.murikka-opisto.fi/index.html. Murikka is
situated in the peaceful Finnish Lake District wilderness. All
students stay in single rooms. Accommodation, all meals and teaching
materials are included in the fee.<br>

<i><b>Registration fees<br>
<br>
</b></i>Including school fee, literature, accommodation, breakfast,
lunch and dinner:<b> 750 Euros.</b> Grants covering the registration
fee are available for all participants from EU under the age of 35,
due to a grant from the European Commission. Some grants are also
available for other participants in great need of economic
support.<br>

2002</b>. The number of participants is limited to 50. Priority is
given to early applicants, as well as to a wide geographical
