[3dem] Two PhD Positions in Structural Biology at SMART – Fall 2025

Dear Colleagues, 
 Two fully funded PhD positions starting in Fall 2025 are now open in my research group at Shenzhen Medical Academy of Research and Translation (SMART). Our lab focuses on understanding the structural basics of human rear diseases such as mitochondrial diseases and ciliopathies. We employ an integrated approach that combines high-pressure freezing, cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy, plasma FIB milling, and cryo-electron tomography to study the in situ architecture of human tissues. We are seeking highly motivated PhD candidates with a strong interest in investigating structural defects related to mitochondria or cilia through advanced cryo-ET methodologies. 
 Located in Shenzhen, a global hub for innovation and technology, SMART is a leading institution dedicated to advancing biomedical research and translating scientific discoveries into clinical applications. Our lab is supported by SMART’s cutting-edge facility equipped with two Titan Krios G4, a Helios Hydra plasma milling and a Aquilos 2 for sample preparation, two high-pressure freezing systems for tissue vitrification, and a Leica confocal CLEM system for correlative light and electron microscopy.
