We are seeking a Cryo-EM Specialist who will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Boston University cryo-EM core, with the position to begin in February 2024.

The Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine is renovating space for a new Glacios-2 cryogenic electron microscope, to be delivered in March 2024. The cryo-EM core will be comprised of a Glacios-2 cryo-EM with XFEG, Fringe free imaging, Selectris energy filter and Falcon 4i camera for cryogenic single particle and tomography data acquisition along with a Vitrobot Mark V for vitreous frozen grid preparation. Microscope software will include Smart EPU and SerialEM. The new cryo-EM core is located on the first floor of the Center for Advanced Biomedical Research, directly adjacent to the Pharmacology, Physiology and Biophysics Departmental cryo-EM facility, and is located in a South End neighborhood of Boston.

The successful candidate must have expertise in cryo-EM, good inter-personal skills, and computational skills in Windows and Linux. Duties will include training users in sample preparation, data collection, data transfer, and providing advice on image processing. The cryo-EM specialist will maintain an excellent workspace, and interface with the Service engineers from ThermoFisher Scientifc to ensure optimal functioning of Core instrumentation. Bi-annual reports on the core facility will be prepared by the cryo-EM specialist in collaboration with the Core Director (Dr. Esther Bullitt), which will be shared at meetings with the Oversight Committee and Users. The cryo-EM specialist may also conduct research at a collaborative level with a project of interest, as approved by the Director.

Preferred qualifications:

1-2 years, as a graduate student or post-doctoral researcher, using a cryo-electron microscope, and computational skills in Windows and Linux.

A highly responsible, reliable, and technically oriented person with excellent inter-personal skills to run the cryo-EM core and protect the University’s and NIH’s investments.
