The CEA/Institut de Biologie Structurale in Grenoble, France is seeking a PhD with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experience to develop graphene liquid cells for high-resolution TEM imaging of hydrated and volatile samples at room temperature.

This project will be a continuation of our efforts to control graphene surface properties and to hermetically encapsulate hydrated samples (https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsnano.3c05378__;!!Mih3wA!HwvictTM9GQ6Dj2TXvgiIX8BwGpz6I6FpDkC_M23dW8Gr3s2GN35OZs31hCyJ2_vTI84P4oeQscBhMsEvv4CIjU$ ). The project will use the Electron Microscopy Platform at the [ https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.ibs.fr/en/research/assembly-dynamics-and-reactivity/methods-and-electron-microscopy-group-g-schoehn/electron-microscopy-platform/?lang=en__;!!Mih3wA!HwvictTM9GQ6Dj2TXvgiIX8BwGpz6I6FpDkC_M23dW8Gr3s2GN35OZs31hCyJ2_vTI84P4oeQscBhMsEXn69K2g$ ] IBS and the Nano-characterization Platform at Minatec/CEA. The two platforms house state-of-the-art microscopes and sample preparation equipment for biology and materials science, repectively. The liquid cells developed will be applied to study a wide range of samples in important research areas, including protein complexes and safer electrolytes in batteries.

The CEA center (Minatec and IBS) in Grenoble is located in the heart of the Alpes. In partnership with industry, the CEA provides concrete solutions to meet the technological needs of the society. The IBS specifically pursues excellence in science through multidisciplinary approaches and innovative methods for integrative structural biology.

In this project, the postdoc will
-- realize graphene liquid cells in different configurations to optimize sealing properties and liquid volume for various types of samples
-- s tudy effects of electron irradiation on liquid samples
-- p erform structural investigations of samples in solution using low-dose technique.

Qualifying candidates will have
-- a PhD degree in science (or equivalent) with at least 3 years of TEM experience

-- g ood fine motor skills

-- good communication (English) and interpersonal skills

-- good organizational and technical problem-solving skills

-- m otivation and ability to work independently

-- c uriosity in different research subjects (ranging from protein complexes to battery components)

The following qualities will be a plus
-- STEM, EELS, and EDS experience
-- programming skills for data analysis
-- experience in imaging organics or radiation sensitive samples
-- French
