Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) in Physical Chemistry to work on a research project under the supervision of Professor Stephan Rauschenbach for a period of up to 12 months with the possibility of an extention to 24 month. The research topic is titled ‘Native preparative mass spectrometry and protein imaging by cryoEM’.
Based on native electrospray ion beam deposition (ES-IBD) the project involves developing new preparation methods for the investigation molecular structure at the atomic level. To validate our novel methods with biomedical relevant applications we seek a PDRA to join the experimental team, focusing on the imaging of proteins and protein complexes with cryoEM enabled by ESIBD. The role will focus on cryoEM imaging and data processing with the top-of-line cryoEM instrumentation present at the University of Oxford with the goal to apply and optimise the novel ESIBD-cryoEM workflow.

You will be expected to manage your own academic research and administrative activities. This involves small scale project management, to co-ordinate multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Chemistry, Physics or a related area, (or be close to completion) prior to taking up your appointment. They will have expertise in one or several of the following cryo electron microscopy, protein structure determination, (native) mass spectrometry, scanning probe microscopy, UHV vacuum technology. They will have a profound understanding of the experimental methods stated and their underlying technical principles and have the technical competence to customise instruments.
The post will be based in the Department of Chemistry, Chemistry Research Laboratory, 12 Mansfield Road, Oxford and the new Kavli Institute for NanoScience Discovery, Sherrington Road, Oxford.
The post is available as soon as possible.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made online and you will be required to upload a supporting statement and CV as part of your online application. Your supporting statement must explain how you meet each of the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. Certificates, references and research papers should not be provided at this stage.
