Bubeck, Doryen A d.bubeck at imperial.ac.uk
Fri Mar 4 06:32:27 PST 2022

Dear all,

I wanted to call your attention to an exciting job opportunity that integrates cryoEM and membrane biophysics to understand how the immune system fights infection. The position is funded by a Wellcome Trust Investigator Award in the labs of Doryen Bubeck (Imperial College London) and Mark Wallace (Kings College London). Please see below for details on the position and how to apply.

Best wishes,

Doryen Bubeck

Job Summary

The Bubeck laboratory (https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.imperial.ac.uk_people_d.bubeck&d=DwIF-g&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=L7-zyQ-04fFCMRqzLIOnx7H0exGZHwIQe_wMPuY600I&m=Ybwe4dba3HC9-GIATAyQj0CjqrRJsm35yiaSXxMf6nanc5kHi0NExGPXzkJli6vU&s=cI1bw3QT3u85u6-HCSvifFAxIVJuDEa61bLO27-ER2I&e= ) is looking to recruit a Research Associate with high level of expertise in cellular tomography. Additional expertise in microbiology is very suited for the position.

Duties and responsibilities

This post, funded by a highly competitive Wellcome Trust Investigator Award, aims to uncover how the membrane attack complex (MAC) kills bacterial pathogens. The project’s primary objective is to discover 1) where MAC is located within the bacterial envelope and 2) how does MAC activation control bacterial killing. You will join an exciting interdisciplinary team of structural biologists and membrane biophysicists to tackle a major question in understanding host-pathogen interactions. The project focuses on cryo electron tomography-based studies of MAC within the context of a series of model membrane systems. The research builds on the lab’s strong track-record in complement structural biology and is closely linked with research activities in membrane biophysics with Prof. Mark Wallace <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.kcl.ac.uk_research_wallace&d=DwIF-g&c=-35OiAkTchMrZOngvJPOeA&r=L7-zyQ-04fFCMRqzLIOnx7H0exGZHwIQe_wMPuY600I&m=Ybwe4dba3HC9-GIATAyQj0CjqrRJsm35yiaSXxMf6nanc5kHi0NExGPXzkJli6vU&s=3garAUs9HzBkDYM1cjCnOU2JxCMrpcSPiF1G9Vhxb6o&e= > at King’s College London.

Essential requirements

You will have a PhD (or be near completion of) in structural biology, ideally with experience in cellular tomography. You must have a strong research track record in studying protein-protein and protein-membrane complexes preferably demonstrated by first author publications in international journals. Experience in the design and execution of workflow for structure determination of proteins or cellular systems from sample preparation to acquisition and analysis of structural biology data.

You must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to write clearly and succinctly for publication. You must also be able to relate well with others, form positive relationships with a wide range of people and to work as part of a team, as well as independently. The ability to develop and apply new concepts and have a creative approach to problem-solving, to set and attain research objectives in a multidisciplinary team are also essential.

Further Information

This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment available for up to three years, with the possibility of extension. You will be based at South Kensington Campus.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range, £36,694- £39,888 per annum.
