Director, Center of Excellence in Electron Microscopy

Description:
The University of Missouri seeks a Director for a new Center of Excellence in Electron Microscopy that results from a collaborative agreement between the University and Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc., with a joint $27M investment, expanding EM capabilities in BioMolecular and Materials Sciences.  The Director will manage a team of staff scientists operating the microscopes, providing research and training services to the regional community, and developing new capabilities in multi-scale imaging.  New equipment includes a Titan Krios G4 for single particle cryo-EM & tomography, a Spectra 300 for aberration-free atomic-level applications, an Aquilos dual beam FIB-SEM for preparation of cellular lamella, correlated fluorescence / EM microscopy, a VolumeScope for tissue imaging, and a Hydra-UX FIB-SEM for materials science applications, all being installed in purpose-built facilities in the new NextGen Precision Health Institute on the Columbia campus.

Responsibilities:

  *   Training & management of Center staff scientists for microscope operation, sample preparation, user-training, data processing consulting;
  *   Liaison with manufacturers, management of service contracts;
  *   Financial oversight of the Center;
  *   Outreach to the scientific community;
  *   Consulting, planning and collaboration on extramurally-funded research projects.
Minimum qualifications: BS or MS (or equivalent experience) plus at least 5 years of relevant experience.
Preferred qualifications:

  *   PhD in physical or biophysical sciences or engineering in a relevant application area with 3 years of experience operating relevant instrumentation (concurrent or otherwise).
  *   Experience of calibration, performance testing, maintenance and operation in any area of EM, electron optics or microanalysis.
  *   Supervisory experience.
  *   Good communication skills.
