Postdoctoral position openings

Biosynthesis, secretion, and function of extracellular polysaccharides



Several postdoctoral positions are available immediately for highly motivated individuals with a strong interest in structural and functional analyses of polysaccharide secretion systems.



The Zimmer lab integrates structural biology with glycobiology and biophysics to delineate how cell surface polysaccharides are synthesized, transported to the cell surface, and assembled to perform diverse biological functions. Postdoctoral positions are available to study the biosynthesis of biofilm polysaccharides, ABC transporter-mediated complex carbohydrate secretion, as well as plant cell wall assembly. The projects combine structural biology and biochemistry with polymer physics to correlate how enzymatic functions influence material properties.



The incumbents will benefit from a diverse and highly collaborative research environment at the University of Virginia School of medicine, state of the art cryo electron microscopy and macromolecular crystallography facilities, as well as an outstanding infrastructure for biophysical characterizations of membrane transport processes. Excellent molecular biology skills are essential and experience in structural biology techniques is advantageous.
