[3dem] Synology storage question

Hi David,

Each spinning platter drive can provide sequential data at ~150 MB/s
SATA SSD drives can provide data at ~600 MB/s, sequential or random

If you have a 1Gb network connection, the max throughput is ~100 MB/s
which would already easily be saturated by a 4 drive RAID 5
If you install a 10Gb card in the Synology and PC, max throughput is ~1 Gb/s
which would need an 8 drive raid 5 to saturate with spinning platters

So, for a 4-8 drive RAID 5 with a 10 Gb connection, SSD might provide some benefit regardless of application
For database operations (not image processing), SSD is worth considering in general
For 8-12 drive setups and image processing, spinning platters are fine

It is also worth mentioning that SSDs can have longevity issues when run in RAID arrays, unless the controller knows they are SSDs and handles them differently.

I have a 12 bay synology with spinning platters and a 10GB network card add-on, and for image processing operations, I can easily saturate the 10GB bus (close to 1 GB/s throughput). I haven't tested database operations.

Hi,

I know that we've had various discussions about using Synology data storage units before, but I have a question that either wasn't addressed or that I have forgotten the answer to.

The question is simply: is the additional cost of SSD's inside the unit worth the extra money in terms of overall better performance?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
