Job Description:
RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Biology/MIT.nano-CryoEM Facility, to assume an integral role in enhancing capabilities in cryogenic sample preparation, electron microscopy, and image analysis. Will support the facility’s diverse user community with daily operations and assist with experimental design and execution.  The Facility’s instrumentation includes a Titan Krios/Bioquantum-K3, Talos Arctica/Falcon3, an Aquilos cryo-FIB/SEM, a Chameleon specimen preparation tool, and a Vitrobot. Responsibilities include assisting researchers with cryogenic specimen preparation of a variety of biological/non-biological samples using standard and emerging vitrification and electron microscopy techniques; operating and maintaining the facility’s specimen preparation equipment and advanced electron microscopes and detectors; training and advising users on techniques and equipment operation; maintaining lab supplies/inventory; assisting with scheduling facility activities and billing; and supporting daily operations as needed.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED:  Ph.D. in biochemistry or related discipline; demonstrated proficiency with hands-on TEM operation; ability to independently design, execute, and optimize TEM experiments; strong organizational, troubleshooting, and communication skills; ability to interact productively with a diverse group of researchers to provide training and assistance in a collaborative work environment; attention to detail, reporting, and responding to experimental queues; ability to clearly document issues for service personnel to maintain instruments; ability to work independently and as part of a team; service orientation; and willingness to learn/perform a wide range of tasks.

PREFERRED:  Four years of biological TEM imaging research experience; solid knowledge of TEM theory; experience identifying and diagnosing issues with microscope performance; experience with cryogenic sample preparation techniques for electron microscopy; experience with single-particle image analysis, tomographic 3D reconstruction, and/or electron crystallography; and expertise with data management, computing hardware, networking, and programming.
