About Us

At Research Complex, we’re committed to advancing the scientific understanding of the world around us. We do that by supporting a wide range of talented and ambitious individuals from across the life and physical sciences. We seek to attract people from a diverse range of backgrounds to help deliver our mission to support the activities we have at Research Complex, whilst providing development opportunities and support to enable our staff to succeed.

Inside Research Complex, you’ll discover scientists working at the frontiers of knowledge, with their research holding the key to answering fundamental questions about the great issues facing society today, from disease to clean energy. Our highly collaborative research projects bring together scientists and technicians from all disciplines in the pursuit of discovery without boundaries.

Research Complex is a joint initiative of UKRI via BBSRC, EPSRC, MRC, NERC and STFC and the Diamond Light Source, to provide a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary research laboratory on the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory site at Harwell in Oxfordshire. With the support of our on-site partners, such as the Diamond Light Source, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, the Central Laser Facility and the Rosalind Franklin Institute we’re bridging the gap between discovery and application to help change lives for the better. And through our unique structure, we’re able to discover the science of tomorrow.

About the Role

Research Complex has recently purchased and commissioned a new state-of-the-art cryo-electron microscope (a 200kV Thermo Fisher Glacios) and we now have an exciting opportunity for a Scientific Specialist in Cryo-Electron Microscopy to underpin and develop RCaH as a centre for high-quality cryoEM in the UK. This will be done in collaboration with the electron Bio-Imaging Centre (eBIC) at Diamond Light Source, the UK National Centre for cryo-electron microscopy in life sciences. This is a science-driven post so we seek an individual to work with the life sciences research groups at RCaH delivering the highest quality cryoEM support.

About You

You will have an appropriate first degree along with a relevant MSc or PhD, or significant demonstrable equivalent experience. You will demonstrate expertise and a track-record in cryoEM methods. A strong background in cryoEM software development and/or cryo-electron tomography is desirable. You will also have significant experience of structural and cellular biology techniques, as well as experience with Windows/Linux/Unix. You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, so as to interact effectively with RCaH users and staff at all levels. You should be well motivated, have strong problem-solving, team working and communication skills with the ability to relate to and communicate with non-expert users about EM issues

Our Benefits

We are strongly committed to your personal development and well-being, with extensive opportunities for training. Choosing to come to work at UKRI means that you will have access to a whole host of benefits, from a defined pension scheme and 30 days of holiday entitlement plus bank holidays, to access to employee shopping/travel discounts and salary sacrifice cycle to work scheme.
