Charlotte,

At least for our Artica, this seems to have been a design flaw in the chilled water flow around the Ceta camera. The water line was designed in a way that it randomly froze (from the active camera cooling itself, from what I can tell). That blocked the water flow, which then heated things up. At least some of the time, even when the warming restored water flow through the camera, other things had heated also, causing the optics board error.

There is a combination hardware/software fix for this. Our engineer is supposed to come sometime this week to install it, but I haven't yet heard when he will be here. From what I can tell, TFS intends to retrofit all the instruments where this is a potential problem. For our Artica, it is a relatively simple retrofit. For others, it can be a bit more involved since older components (maybe the camera controller?) may also need to be replaced.

I hope this helps and I'm happy to give you more information if that would be useful.

Hi David,

How was the "optics board degraded" issue resolved eventually? We are experiencing the same thing here at Gothenburg University core facilities. We will have a technician come to look at it today.

Best,

Hi David,

We had this issue on our Talos Arctica and replacing optics boards did not fix the problem. It was finally solved by upgrading the firmware of the optics boards from 2.0.3 to 2.0.7. Apparently the correct firmware was never pushed to the boards after a prior software update.

There is a coil calibration procedure that had to be re-done as well.

Restarting the TEM server doesn't switch the FEG off as others have pointed out. However the gun lens trick mentioned by Mike Strauss doesn't appear to work for us after updating the microscope software to 1.15. We have to do a TEM server restart to reset the Falcon dose protector.

Hi,

We have a chronic problem with our Talos Artica sending out "optics board degraded" error messages. There is an easy reset for this, except that at least for our system, the Falcon camera can't be used after resetting the optics board unless one also does a microscope server reboot. Which my engineer says means I need to shut down and restart the FEG. So it's not an easy fix.

This seems to happen once every few weeks, maybe once per month. Except that yesterday, it happened three times within about two hours. [I reset the optics but didn't use the Falcon, for those of you wondering how I could restart the FEG that quickly... ] It didn't happen today at all, so the error really seems to be happening randomly.

My engineer says that the most likely cause of this is interruptions to the chilled water supply, but I have not been able to identify any sort of problem with flow, chilling, etc. Has anyone else seen similar chronic issues with this error?

Thanks for any advice you can offer.
