[3dem] BSL2 vs BSL1

Hi Jian,

Why would there be an increase? It has absolute zero bearing on activities and/or responsibilities by the SVC group. In fact, it all comes down to the lab manager who essentially gives the lab and scope room a clean bill of health.

I heard there will be ~10% increase of service contract from BSL1 to BSL2. Has it been applied world wide?

Jian

Hi Ruben,
Jaap is correct, BSL2 assumes standard lab practice, lab coat, gloves at the most, but no special safety/decon procedures. And no service cost increase. TFS does not want to deal with BSL3, so that is out of question. Our Krios is classified by TFS as level 2 instrument and my engineers come and go as they like (face mask is required currently… for a different reason). I do not see any cosequences declaring your microscope s BSL2.
All the best,
Misha

Forgot to add that before SVC enters the facility, a wipe down is required. Akin to what you’d do with a lab bench.

Hi Ruben,

Don’t think BSL2 requires that. BSL3 for sure does and requires elaborate decon procedures to be in place. UTMB goes for a SVC visit back from level 3 to level 2. It is then safe to enter.

Hi Jian,

Yes, if we decide to put BSL2 specimens in the microscopes, we have to tell TFS about it, to make sure that their engineers are safe.

Dear Ruben,

Is it request by TFS (FEI)?

Hi all,

Due to the type of samples that we are interested in imaging, it would be advantageous for us to declare our facility as BSL2. This designation, however, has some implications in terms of the paperwork and safety measures that have to be taken whenever service is called. Cost of course I am sure is another factor. Does anyone have experience as to the real implications that have to be considered? It is my understanding that once we declare the facility to be BSL2, every instrument is included in the designation, and it is not reversible.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Ruben.
