Postdoctoral scientist position in cryo-ET of host-virus interaction.

The laboratories of Anne Moscona<http://www.physiology.columbia.edu/moscona.html> at Columbia University Medical School and Amedee des Georges<http://structbio.asrc.cuny.edu/people/dr-amedee-des-georges/> at City University of New York are jointly looking for a postdoctoral scientist to explore the molecular mechanisms of viral entry into host cells. The aim is to use cryo-electron tomography to elucidate the relationship between structural features of the entry process and viral evolution, fitness, and transmissibility of human parainfluenza virus type 3 (HPIV3), an enveloped virus representative of the important group of human paramyxoviruses.

Highly motivated PhD graduates with a strong drive and unconditional interest in science should apply. The candidate should have experience in structural biology. Preferred experience is with cryo-electron microscopy, protein biochemistry and biophysics; however, cryo-electron microscopy is not a prerequisite and motivated applicants from other areas of structural biology are welcome to apply.

The successful candidate would join the newly developed Center for Host-Pathogen Interaction housed in the department of Microbiology & Immunology at the Columbia University Medical Center. The research program whose academic links to three departments -- Microbiology & Immunology, Pediatrics, and Physiology & Biophysics – support a rich academic environment. The initiative is designed around the interdisciplinary theme of virus-host interactions. Projects draw from strategies and methods of molecular biology, cell biology, biophysics, immunology, computational biology, structural biology, and virology. The laboratories conduct basic research on paramyxoviruses that cause serious and prevalent childhood diseases, and on newly emerging human RNA viruses that are increasingly the source of global epidemics.

The applicant would also work closely with the laboratory of Dr. Amedee des Georges at the new CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC).
Opened in Fall 2014 in the heart of Manhattan, the 200,000 ft2 CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) offers a highly interactive and collaborative environment that integrates structural biologists with colleagues in neuroscience, photonics, nanoscience and environmental sciences. Combining world-class experts in these areas with state-of-the-art instrumentation<http://www.asrc.cuny.edu/facilities/> both at the ASRC and at the adjacent New York Structural Biology Center<http://nysbc.org/> including several FEI Titan and Krios cryo-electron microscopes, the ASRC offers a unique opportunity for research programs to flourish among normally-disparate fields.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter of their experience, current curriculum vitae (CV), publication list and contact information for three referees in the briefest delays to amedee.desgeorges at asrc.cuny.edu<mailto:amedee.desgeorges at asrc.cuny.edu> . Position will close as soon as it is filled.
