One PhD, one Post-doc, one lab tech and one EM engineer Positions available in Cryo-EM

Dear all,

I would like to draw you attention to the availability of four open positions in my lab that has just moved from Strasbourg to Bordeaux on January 1st 2018, France. We are currently located at the European Institute for Chemistry and Biology (IECB), 2 Rue Robert Escarpit, 33600 Pessac.

All positions are available immediately, the Post-doc and EM engineer positions can potentially run up to 5 years, lab tech and PhD position are 3 year-contracts.

The team has just obtained an ERC Starting Grant (5 years), University of Bordeaux Excellence Chaire, an ATIP grant (a French thing…) and is still funded by a couple other French grants...

Job description: The research will focus on studying protein translation regulation in eukaryotes, including pathogenic protozoa, by cryo-EM. The group will investigate among other aspects the differences existing between mammals and pathogenic protozoa, such as kinetoplastids and plasmodium, in the structure of their translation complexes. In addition, the group will study the function of protozoa-specific ribosomal features, which could ultimately lead to the finding of several potential pharmacophores.

Requirements:

The successful PhD candidate holds a master degree in biology, biochemistry, biophysics or a related field. The successful candidate must have basic knowledge in structures of biomolecules and some affinity with computers. It is preferred to have some experience in proteins expression and purification.

The Post-doc candidate has preferably a PhD in structural biology, however a PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology or a related field are acceptable depending on the candidate’s CV, strong written and oral communication skills in English and computational skills. It will be a big extra to have some experience in single particle electron cryo-microscopy and/or molecular modeling.

The lab tech candidate holds a Bachelor or a Masters degree in molecular biology or biochemistry (salary will depend on the degree). Part of the lab tech duties are the management of the lab. The technical tasks will consiste on supporting the different projects of the lab.

The EM engineer candidate holds a Maters degree or a PhD (salary will depend on the degree) in biophysics or a related field and has some experience with electron microscopes. Skills in data-processing and some basic knowledge in IT are preferable. Successful candidate will be trained in our home facility by the head engineer of the platform. The EM engineer will be in charge of conducting the cryo-EM experiments (grid preparation, screening, data-acquisition, etc…) for the running projects of the lab.

For all positions, French is not required, English will do.

Application: Please send your CV, at least two references and a statement outlining your interests and relevant work to Yaser Hashem at yaser.hashem at u-bordeaux.fr <mailto:y.hashem at ibmc-cnrs.unistra.fr>

We have a state-of-art EM facility counting all the related grid-preparation material, several microscopes among which an f20 equipped with a CCD 8k camera , a CM120 and a Talos Arctica (200kv) equipped with a Falcon 3 camera and soon with a K2 camera. In addition, an LVEM5 EM (a bench-top 5kV EM) was purchased for grids screening.

To end, I would like to add that Bordeaux is one of the finest European cities where winters are quite mild and the summers are hot, about 30 miles only from the Ocean and needless to mention the best vineyards in the world :), many places to hangout and rents are affordable.

Best regards
