Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recently announced the launch of the National Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility (NCEF) under the umbrella of the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. This facility will provide rapid access, for a nominal cost, to extramural scientists who can provide evidence that they have pre-screened grids ready for high-resolution data collection. The facility will open in Fall 2016 with one Titan Krios microscope, and additional microscopes will be added as needed.

I have agreed to serve as the Director to help the launch of this facility by overseeing the installation of the microscope and by providing a detailed plan of how the facility should initially be set up and organized. The process of hiring the necessary personnel to operate the facility and the responsibility for smooth operation rests with Leidos Biomedical Research Inc., a company that is contracted by NCI to operate the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.

A committee composed of members of the cryo-EM and structural biology communities will advise the NCI on the operation of the facility and on the types of services that will be available. Details on this oversight and on the progress of the installation will be posted periodically at http://www.cancer.gov/research/resources/cryoem.

Leidos will soon be actively recruiting to fill openings for trained cryo-EM specialists to staff the facility and assist users with data collection.

If you have any questions that are not addressed in the website link above, you can send an e-mail to nci-ncef at mail.nih.gov<mailto:nci-ncef at mail.nih.gov>.
