Dear Colleague,

Positions immediately available at the NeCEN

Two 4 to 5-year positions are available immediately at the Netherlands Center of Electron Nanoscopy (NeCEN). The positions require different levels of expertise and experience and offer numerous opportunities for career development. For more information (http://workingat.leiden.edu).

* Research scientist / Assistant professor with a PhD in the fields of biology, chemistry or physics with preferably more than 5 year experience in specimen preparation and high resolution cryo electron microscopy with a keen interest to contribute running an international centre for advanced cryo electron microscopy. You will be involved in all aspects, from project evaluation, data acquisition to map interpretation. There will be numerous prospects for developing scientific and technical collaborations, as well as optimising state of the art software and hardware.
* Computer scientist with a PhD in physics, computer science or engineering and a proven 2 to 5 years track record illustrating experience and interest in dealing with networks, system supporting, the handling of large data sets and high performance computing.

NeCEN is the advanced cryo electron microscopy facility for the Netherlands and is equipped with two Titan Krios TEMs highly suitable to explore complex biological structures with single particle cryo EM and with cryo electron tomography. One Titan is equipped with a Falcon 2 direct electron detector, HAADF STEM, an FEI phase plate and with a Gatan GIF and K2 (Summit) director electron detector. The other Titan is equipped with an XFEG, HAADF-STEM, Cs Corrector and Falcon 2 direct electron detector. NeCEN is expanding both its team and resources and has a close collaboration with FEI Company, the manufacturer of the Titan Krios microscopes, and is used as demonstration site of flagship cryo EM instrumentation.

NeCEN is part of the Faculty of Science of Leiden University and is embedded in the Institute of Biology Leiden (IBL) , and integrated with other imaging groups and facilities at the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Medicine (LUMC). Opportunities are provided both at the LUMC and at NeCEN for further professional development of cryo EM skills, data processing and knowledge with courses, training, meetings and conferences within the field of cryo EM. Leiden is a pleasant, historic, livable town situated in one of the most knowledge-intensive areas of the Netherlands. Leiden is located close to the North Sea coast, and within a 20 minute train ride to Amsterdam, Amsterdam Airport, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht.

NeCEN is looking for highly talented and preferably experienced cryo electron microscopy experts who would like to contribute to help perform the facility at a world-class level (data used in high impact journals Science (Diebolder, 2014), Sci Rep (Bischoff 2014, Afanasyev 2015), Nature (Effremov 2015, Maskell 2015, Ecken (2014) and Mol Cell (Arenz 2014). Depending on the candidate, part of the function could include pursuing one's own research question.

Candidates should contact Dr. Bram Koster (a.j.koster at lumc.nl<mailto:a.j.koster at lumc.nl>) and include a CV, short statement of accomplishments and electron microscopy skills, research interests, and contact information for three references. This call for candidates will close August 1st, 2015.

Best wishes
Bram
