As many of you know, the 3DEM Gordon Conference was over-subscribed by ~100 people. This reflects the exponentially growing interest in cryo-EM not just from people doing cryo-EM, but in other communities such as x-ray crystallography and NMR. We therefore need to look at additional mechanisms for getting together to discuss the latest research and methods in cryo-EM. There is a great opportunity with the Annual Meeting of the Biophysical Society, which will be held in LA from 27 February to 2 March:

The cryo-EM Subgroup of the Biophysical Society has now been established, and this means that there will be a cryo-EM Subgroup Symposium on Saturday, 27 Feb. A least three of the regular Symposium speakers will be featuring cryo-EM results. We also have a great opportunity for cryo-EM poster and platform sessions. The number of platform sessions, which include eight oral presentations each, will simply depend upon the number of submitted abstracts in the cryo-EM category (10B). In broad strokes, the formula for platform session selection is to have more than 30 submissions. So it easy to imagine that we could get 60 cryo-EM abstracts submitted with two platform sessions resulting. When you do submit an abstract, please indicate Category 10B: Electron Microscopy, Diffraction and Scattering Techniques as your first choice. This category was made quite broad this year, but if a substantial number of abstracts are received there will be a separate cryo-EM category next year.
