Teaching/Research Postdoc Fellowship Available at the University of Texas at El Paso

Purpose of Position
        One National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded postdoctoral research & teaching fellowship position is available at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). The postdoctoral fellow will form part of the BUILDing SCHOLARS (Building Undergraduate Infrastructure Leading to Diversity: Southwest Consortium of Health-Oriented education Leaders And Research Scholars) Center (http://www.buildingscholars.utep.edu/). The Center is training the next generation of biomedical and socio-behavioral scientists and engineers from underrepresented groups for careers in health research. The Center addresses the needs of undergraduate students in the Southwestern US through a multi-institution consortium which includes colleges and universities in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with faculty in developing and teaching a research-intensive course for undergraduates, which will support the research programs of the faculty and postdoctoral fellow and will generate data leading to publications; the fellow will also teach a Research Foundations course at the freshman level.

Essential Functions
        The research and teaching of the postdoctoral fellow will be related to Proteins Folding Proteins: Understanding How Chaperonins Function, led by Dr. Ricardo Bernal (Chemistry). The courses will involve teaching both X-ray structure determination and cryo-electron microscopic reconstructions using a hands-on approach. The successful candidate will have excellent biochemical, structural biology, and computational skills that include protein expression, purification, crystallization, plasmid design, FPLC and single particle reconstruction experience. Candidate should be able to teach structured biochemistry lab courses for college sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
        The position will provide the postdoctoral fellow with resources and a mentoring community that will enable her/him to compete for extramural funding, excel in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and eventually succeed in a tenure-track academic career. The postdoctoral fellow will be empowered to develop his/her research portfolio as well as teaching expertise in the use of discipline-based, student-centered active learning approaches. Successful candidates will be interested in and capable of incorporating critical thinking, group learning, online/flipped classroom learning, and other experiential learning approaches in a university environment. The postdoctoral fellow will begin with 1-year appointment, with reappointment in successive years contingent on satisfactory progress.

Required Qualifications
        Candidates must have an earned doctorate in biochemistry-related field by their start date (expected January 2016). They must also be able to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
        Experience in curriculum development, undergraduate teaching and research mentoring, as well as excellent English communication skills.
