International course announcement
Multi-scale integration in biological systems - 2014


Theme of course: Physical description of biological systems, from the single molecule to organisms.


Description of course: One of the fundamental issues in biology is the understanding of the relationship between the multiple spatial and temporal scales observed in a biological system. From molecules to a cellular function, from a collection of cells to an organism, or from individuals to a population, the complex interactions between singular elements can give rise to “emergent” properties at the ensemble level. To what extent can the spatial and temporal order seen at the system level be explained by subscale properties?


Objective of course: The course will give an overview of modern physical tools that have been developed to address the issue of scale integration (mornings) and will show how these tools can be applied to specific biological systems (afternoons).


Topics:

  *   Statistical physics of out of equilibrium systems / Information theory, inference techniques.
  *   Non-linear physics, criticality / bistability, switches, oscillations, signal amplification.
  *   Self-organization, collective phenomenon, phase transitions / pattern formation, flocks, cellular architecture, development.
  *   Evolution, cooperativity and competition / population genetics, evolutionary approach of cancer.

Audience: Master-2 students, PhD students and postdocs interested in the interface between physics and biology. (The course will provide 3 ETCS at some doctoral schools in Paris, e.g. ED PIF and ED FDV.)


Conditions of selection: Participants will be selected on the basis of their research interest (CV), motivation statement and one reference letter. Each participant will give an oral presentation (20 min + 10 min questions) on a research article that he/she will chose in a list of papers given by the lecturers about two weeks before the beginning of the course. In addition, each participant will prepare a poster on their research. Poster will remain on display during the whole duration of the course and will be discussed during lunch breaks. Students or researchers can also audit the course without receiving credit.

Location: Institut Curie - Paris


Registration fees: No registration fees are requested. All lunches (except for noncredit participants and on Sunday 16th) will be provided by Institut Curie. Participants’ home laboratories are responsible for paying travel and lodging. Institut Curie will reserve hotel rooms at preferential rates. A few travel fellowships will be available upon request.
