Going for a binary-blob-friendly (corporate) distro like RedHat/CentOS or Ubuntu makes sense for compatibility arguments. If you're interested in CUDA, there's no point entertaining FSF purism.

Whatever you go with, avoid trendy graphical environments, like Ubuntu's Unity. Stick with GNOME, Xfce, or something similarly vanilla.
