Dear All,

I wish a Happy and Successful New Year to everybody!

Two postdoctoral positions are available in the labs of Prof. Elena Orlova and Prof. Gabriel Waksman (Institute for Structural and Molecular Biology, Department of Biological

Sciences, Birkbeck College).

A project is related to biochemical/biophysical experiments and
structural analysis by cryo-electron microscopy of the T4S system core
complexed with individual ATPases. We aim employ advanced cryo-electron
microscopy, statistical analysis and image processing to obtain 3D
structures of complexes. Assistants to carry out This structural study
is led by Prof Elena Orlova andProf Gabriel Waksman, The collaboration
of these two groups has produced high profile publications in the
highest impact journals (Science, 2009, 323:266-268; Nature, 2009,
462:1011-1015; PNAS, 2012, 474:49-53). The research programme is funded
by a grant from the Medical Research Council to Profs E. Orlova and G.
Waksman.

The Institute of Structural and Molecular Biologyof London (ISMB) and
the Department of Biological Sciences at Birkbeck (BS) form the focal
point for structural research and encourages collaborations with
chemists and computational biologists. BS/ISMB is an international
centre for EM studies housingTecnai 10, 12, FEG F20 and FEG Polara
microscopes (FEI) equipped with CCD cameras allowing efficient data
collection.Allnecessary techniques and expertise required for the
successful execution of the project are in place,we are using a
combinationof different software packages (SPIDER, EMAN, IMAGIC, and
other) for image analysis, utilizing the most efficient features of each
system to provide the best results.

Applicants should have a PhD in Structural Molecular Biology,
Biophysicsor a related area, postdoctoral research experience and
relevant research publications. Experience in electron microscopy and a
background in structural biology are desirable.
