Dear colleagues
We are seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Research Assistant to carry out structural biology research on the helicase complex E1
and its complexes with DNA in the lab of Prof. Elena Orlova (Institute for Structural and Molecular Biology, Department of Biological
Sciences, Birkbeck College). This study will be done in collaboration with Dr. C. Sanders (University of Sheffield).
Helicases are an important class of enzyme and they are therapeutic
targets in cancer and viral diseases. They remain poorly
understood. The work will advance our understanding of the mechanisms of
DNA replication in a well-recognized and established
model organism. We propose to employ advanced cryo-electron
microscopy, statistical analysis and image processing to obtain
3D structures of the initiator protein E1-DNA complex in bovine
papillomavirus. The Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology
of London (ISMB) and the Department of Biological Sciences at Birkbeck
(BS) form the focal point for structural research and
encourages collaborations with chemists and computational biologists.
BS/ISMB is an international centre for EM studies housing
Tecnai 10, 12, FEGF20 andFEG Polara microscopes (FEI) equipped with CCD
cameras allowing efficient data collection.All
necessary techniques and expertise required for the successful execution
of the project are in place, we are using a combination
of different software packages (SPIDER, EMAN, IMAGIC, and other) for
image analysis, utilizing the most efficient features of
each system to provide the best results.
PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area required. Experience of
multi-protein complex expression and purification,
single particle electron microscopy will be an advantage.
