Job Title: Post-doctoral Research Associate – Membrane Protein Biochemist/Cryo-electron Microscopist

Contract Type: Fixed-term for a period of four years with a start date of as soon as possible

Location: Krebs Institute, Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Sheffield, U.K.

Salary: Grade 7 £28,251 to £30,870 per annum

An exciting position exists to work within a team concerned with the three-dimensional structures of proteins that transport adenosine and other nucleosides across biological membranes. These transporters not only play vital roles in many physiological processes by regulating extracellular adenosine levels, but also act as key routes of uptake for drugs used in the therapy of cancers and viral infections. The project is part of a multi-centre collaboration with the University of Leeds, the Research Complex at Harwell and the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.

The successful applicant will be responsible primarily for structural work on the project under the direction of Professor Per Bullough in Sheffield. The work will involve biochemistry and cryoEM of 2D crystals of nucleoside transporters. The successful candidate will have, or be about to be awarded a PhD in a relevant discipline, (or have equivalent experience). Experience in protein biochemistry and/or molecular biology is essential. Experience of cryoEM or X-ray crystallography would be an advantage but training can be provided.

The post is fixed-term for a period of four years with a start date of as soon as possible.

The Krebs Institute is well equipped for cryomicroscopy, image analysis and protein biochemistry. Sheffield is a friendly, relaxed city bordering right onto the Peak District National Park. It is superbly situated for outdoor enthusiasts and has excellent opportunities for cultural and social life. There is easy access to international airports.
