The Institute of Cancer Research (a College of the University of London)
is a world-class cancer research organisation with HEFCE RAE ratings of
international excellence across all of its research programmes.

We seek to appoint a post doctoral training fellow to the Section of
Structural Biology to undertake single particle EM analysis of the
anaphase promoting complex (APC/C).

Funded by Cancer Research UK the post-doctoral training fellow will
join a team investigating the structure and mechanism of the anaphase
promoting complex (APC/C), a large macro-molecular assembly that
regulates progression through the cell cycle. The aim of this project is
to apply single particle cryo-electron microscopy techniques to
determine high-resolution structures of the APC/C in complex with
co-activator and D-box and KEN-box peptides. This project extends our
existing 10 Å structure. Based within Prof. D. Barford’s group the
project will be focussed on EM grid preparation, data acquisition and
processing, and 3-dimensional reconstructions with contributions towards
sample preparation. The project would suit a highly motivated and
committed scientist interested in molecular mechanisms of the cell
cycle, cancer biology, structural biology and electron microscopy.

The Section is well equipped for cryo-electron microscopy (FEI TF20 and
T12, 80 core computer cluster) and for protein expression and
purification.

The successful applicant will hold at least a PhD (or equivalent) in a
biological/physical science. Experience with single particle electron
microscopy data acquisition and processing is essential and experience
with protein preparations would be an advantage.

The post is funded from 1st Jan 2011 to 30th Sep 2012 in the first
instance. Salary range: £29,695 to £34,353.

Informal enquires may be made to the Section Co-Chairman Professor
David Barford (David.Barford at icr.ac.uk).
Please do not send your application direct to Professor Barford, CVs
must be submitted in line with the instructions below.

To apply, please send two copies of your CV and covering letter (incl.
the names and addresses of two referees) together with a completed Equal
Opportunities Monitoring Form to the HR Office, The Institute of Cancer
Research, 123 Old Brompton Road, London SW7 3RP quoting reference number
C398

Closing date: 18th Oct, 2010
