Announces

A Workshop on EM Structure Determination of Challenging Macromolecules
November 8-13, 2009

National Resource for Automated Molecular Microscopy
The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), La Jolla, California.

We invite applications to participate in a Workshop on EM Structure
Determination of Challenging Macromolecules. The course is aimed at
students, postdocs and junior faculty that already have experience
practicing cryoEM. We can accommodate ~50 participants.

A major goal of the course will be to discuss some of the challenges
we face in using cryoEM to solve macromolecules that are either small
or conformationally variable in structure, and which thus present
unique challenges to the existing techniques. Topics to be discussed
will include improvements in specimen preparation, imaging, processing
and reconstruction. The basic format of the course will be
theoretical lectures in the mornings followed by practical
demonstrations and panel discussions in the afternoon. Evenings will
be reserved for poster presentations by student participants and
research talks by instructors.

The instructors for the course will include: Francisco Asturias
(TSRI), Tim Baker (UCSD), Stan Burgess (U. Leeds), Bridget Carragher
(TSRI), Anchi Cheng (TSRI), Wah Chiu (Baylor), David de Rosier
(Brandeis), Joachim Frank (Albany), Bob Glaeser (Berkeley), Niko
Grigorieff (Brandeis), Richard Henderson (MRC), Grant Jensen
(Caltech), Jack Johnson (TSRI), Elizabeth Kubalek (TSRI), Steven
Ludtke (Baylor), Ron Milligan (TSRI), Eva Nogales (UCB), Pawel Penczek
(Houston), Clint Potter (TSRI), Fred Sigworth (Yale), Vinzenz Unger
(Yale), Nigel Unwin (MRC/TSRI), Thomas Walz (Harvard) and Mark Yeager
(TSRI).

Applications forms may be found online at the workshop web page:
	http://nramm.scripps.edu/seminars/2009/cryoem/
Applicants are asked to provide a CV, publication list, a short
description of their current work and future plans, and a preliminary
title for their poster.

A registration fee of $500 will be charged to participants from non-
profit institutions. All meals will be provided as part of the course
registration fee but participants will be expected to cover their own
travel and lodging expenses. Cost of housing is approximately $80/
night for a shared room. The course organizers will help coordinate
room sharing arrangements.

The application deadline is 1 July and a final selection of
participants will be made by 1 August.
