The following 4 positions are available at the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory (www.lbl.gov) in the group of Manfred Auer (mauer at lbl.gov
).

1. Postdoc
Description: Technology development on labeling and imaging of plant
tissue and microbial communities in the context of biofuels at the
Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI, www.jbei.org).
The successful postdoctoral researcher will develop, adapt and employ
novel approaches for imaging plants and microbial communities as part
of the Joint BioEnergy Institute (www.jbei.org). The challenge is to
develop novel labeling approaches, i.e. 16S rRNA FISH imaging, that
are compatible with faithful TEM preparation and to carry out
correlative fluorescence and electron microscopy imaging of large
areas and volumes, and possibly also some electron tomography. We
further anticipate to employ dual beam FIB/SEM imaging to obtain 3D
volumes of microbial communities.

The work will be carried out in close collaboration with other
investigators at the Joint BioEnergy Institute in the Technologies,
and Deconstruction Divisions, in which the Auer lab oversees all
sophisticated imaging efforts. The focus of JBEI is to characterize
plant cell walls, and their degradation by chemicals, enzymes and
microbes in order to gain fundamental biophysical insights that will
help overcome the problem of recalcitrance of lignocellulose for
biofuel production.

Required:
· Ph.D. in Physics, Biophysics, Analytical Chemistry, Biophysical
Chemistry or a related field of science.

· Experience with electron microscopic sample preparation and
imaging. Experience with high-pressure freezing, immuno-affinity or
tag-based labeling would be a plus, but is not essential.

· Strong written and oral communication skills, and a high degree of
organization would be desirable, but highly creative (and less
organized) candidates would also be welcome.

· Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and obtain results.

· Ability to work in a team environment and effectively interact with
a broad range of colleagues.
