PhD PROJECTS IN STRUCTURAL CELL BIOLOGY

An exciting postgraduate study opportunity exists immediately in the
laboratories of A/Prof Ben Hankamer, Dr Brad Marsh and Prof Boris Martinac
for a highly-motivated candidate to undertake PhD studies of nano-devices
for targeted drug delivery. The atmosphere shared among our research groups
is enthusiastic, innovative and success-oriented.

This project will focus on the use of cutting-edge structural methods
including electron tomography (ET) and electron crystallography to optimise
liposomal preparations for efficient targeted drug release through use of
bacterial mechano-sensitive (MS) channels as "nanovalves". This work will
involve high resolution 3D structural analysis of MS channel mutants that
exhibit reduced gating thresholds, and characterization of how different
lipid compositions influence curvature of the liposome membrane to activate
channel opening for controlled drug release.

Stipend support is available, but prospective candidates will be expected to
have recently graduated with Honours Class I or IIA (or the equivalent) in
Biochemistry or Molecular Cell Biology, and be strongly competitive for
scholarships at the University, State and/or Federal levels.
