the 3DEM Gordon Conference

As many of you will have seen from the recent Science announcement - and
remember from my last message - the 3DEM Gordon Conference will be held
this year June 2 - 17  at Colby Sawyer College,  New London, New
Hampshire.  The conference web site,
http://www.grc.org/programs/2005/threed.htm ,
currently lists the program overview and will shortly show the full
program.  The theme this year is "Whither (macromolecular) EM", inspired
in part by Steve Harrison's piece of a similar title.  We will take a
quick look back at the state of the art during the first 20 years of the
3DEM GRC and then project ahead to guess where our field will be some
years into the future, emphasizing what it will take to reach our goals
and expectations.  The Sunday evening speakers will set the tone for
this theme: Keiichi Namba will describe the developments that have led
to atomic structures for the bacterial flagellum and associated
complexes and how he sees EM continuing its role in understanding cell
motility.  Ray Stevens will provide a perspective on high-thoughput
activities in x-ray crystallography, how they relate to his experience
in EM, and opportunities that await as our technology continues to
mature.

Attendance at Gordon Conferences is by application only.  The on-line
application to attend the conference can be  reached from the web site
above.  The deadline for applying is March 31, as for the previous
conference.  Acceptance will be unrelated to the order in which
applications are received, provided that they are received before the
deadline.  Places at the conference will be available for advanced
graduate  students, postdocs, junior and senior investigators, both
within and outside the field, and industrial representatives.  We
anticipate that the number of applicants will again be substantially
greater than the number of available  places, so if you want to attend,
get your application in on time.

There is some bright news with respect to attendance, if not for this
year.  The 3DEM GRC is now an annual event.  The 2006 conference,
Chaired by Helen Saibil,  will be held  June 25 - 30, 2006 at Il Ciocco,
Barga, Italy.
